IDEA: Knowing What To Ask For
 |
It usually happens right after Thanksgiving dinner. This year was no different. I had just pushed back from the table and was admiring my mother’s handiwork. The nine of us had been eating for what seemed like hours, yet all the bowls and platters were still brimming with food.
Then, like clockwork, my mother turned to me with that look in her eye and, tilting her head to one side, asked the dreaded question. “So, Annie, what do you want for Christmas?” |
I hate that question.
Why do I hate that question? Because I have no earthly idea what I want for Christmas. I never do.
I remember being eight or nine years old and spending hours pouring through the Sears Wishbook, expecting something to speak to me. I made long lists for Santa, but I’m not sure anything on those lists came out of my imagination. It was a simple calculation – figure out what’s available, subtract everything that’s lame. Dear Santa…
Now, decidedly grown up, I still struggle with the question. Maybe I struggle because “What do you want for Christmas?” is an awful lot like “What do you want in your life?” That’s a tough one too.
What we fail to realize is that all we have to do is ask. The hard part is knowing what to ask for.
During this busy holiday season, take a few moments to reflect on what’s important in your life. Think about what you really want. Decide if your dream is along the road you’re traveling, or if you might need to take a detour if you hope to get there in this lifetime.
Here’s wishing you and yours a very happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!
